Why Choose A Honda ATV?

Why choose a Honda ATV?
There is a simple reason why you will see so many Honda products still hard at work after many years of service; they are built to last.

First Time Buyer's Guide

When choosing an ATV ask yourself these questions:

  • Is four wheel drive important to you?
The type of terrain that you will be using the ATV on will determine how much traction you require, and so the type of drive train. If you are using the ATV on mostly flat or only gently undulating land, then 2 wheel drive may be sufficient for your needs. In the Honda range the Fourtax 250 or Foutrax 420 2wd models.

However if the land is steeper, muddy or prone to flooding, then 4 wheel drive will give you the extra grip you need to perform your tasks.
  • What type of activities will you be performing?
This is probably the most important question to ask yourself when choosing an ATV. People use ATVs for a variety of tasks in a variety of environments, so it's important to make sure your ATV is capable of doing what you ask of it. Half way up a mountain is not the right place to realise that your ATV will not be able to get you and your load home safely.

Where the ATV is not being used for demanding work, the Fourtrax 250 models are more than capable of helping bring the sheep in, or getting around the stable yard.

If you need to perform light to medium utility work, such as spraying or pulling a small trailer, then one of the Fourtrax range should be more than capable for most peoples needs.

However if the work is more of a heavy duty nature, for example pulling larger loads on trailers, then the Foreman range would be more suited.

Do you require a bike for leisure use, or for getting around a large estate quickly? Then the Rincon's powerful engine and independent rear suspension will provide a quick and comfortable ride.
  • Which transmission do you prefer?
    • In picking the right ATV for you, the transmission depends on how your own style of riding. The Honda range offers transmission types including manual, electric shift (ESP) or automatic. Manual shift gear changes are good if you want full control when tackling taking terrain. Based on technology originally designed in our racing cars, our electric shift (ESP) push button technology with automatic clutch gives you smooth and quick gear changes.

The automatic transmission systems used in our ATVs give you the feeling of seamless acceleration over any terrain.
  • Anything else?
    • Considering the size and experience of the person or people who will be riding the ATV cart the most is also helpful to think about before choosing an ATV. The size of their body and the strength they have should also be a consideration. Always make sure that you buy a model that is not too heavy or too big for the riders to handle safely.
Many bikes contain individual features and specifications that will suit one persons needs more than another. Honda's Authorised Dealers are trained to make sure you pick the right ATV for you.

Complete list of Honda ATV features

Completely purpose-built

No compromise.

Unlike many ATVs which are adaptations of motorbikes, our entire utility range has been specifically designed and built as ATVs.

Longitudinally mounted engine

Power to the wheels.

With the crankshaft in line with the frame, the engine position gives a smoother, more efficient power-flow to the wheels whilst keeping the centre of gravity low for greater stability.

The first liquid-cooled engine

Built for the ATV.

Our first liquid-cooled 4-stroke 499cc engine gives massive torque and power. Unlike many ATVs our entire utility range - including the engine - have been designed and built as ATVs, not as adaptations.

Fuel-injection

Feel the power boost.

The fuel-injected, liquid cooled OHV (overhead valve) engine gives you more power and greater acceleration, as well as superb fuel economy.

Hondamatic™ transmission

It's the Honda way.

The constantly variable automatic transmission provides smooth power and true engine braking for super control. There are also two computer-optimised gear modes for improved horsepower and torque performance.

Super heavy-duty automatic clutch

Control at low speeds.

If you need to carry out a precise manoeuvre or work within a confined space, the low clutch engagement gives you greater control at low ground speeds and superior towing capability.

Class-leading handling

Hugs the terrain.

Thanks to the new independent double-wishbone front and rear suspension (IRS), you'll experience increased ground clearance and terrain-hugging grip.

AP Suretrac™

Torque-sensitive front limited-slip differential.

Which is another way of saying that we have a brilliant patented system that transfers power to the wheel that has most traction. This gives you a light, positive steering and a tight turning circle.

TraxLok™

Drive the way you want to.

Our unique system gives you the choice of 2wd or 4wd at the flick of a switch or a push of a lever. So you can switch between 2wd manoeuvrability and 4wd traction whilst you're on the move.

Electric gear shift (ES Models)

Just like in our Formula 1 cars.

The Electric Shift Program ESP is both super smooth and super quick, sensing and adjusting to your riding style. All at the touch of a button.

Brake with confidence

Safe and durable

The dual front disc brakes with a patented scraper system to remove mud and snow build-up. Brakes also feature thicker, longer-wearing pad material and an audible warning when pad life is low.

Dual hydraulic disc brakes

No 'free-wheeling'.

Truly inspiring stopping power whatever the conditions. The dual front and single rear disc brakes and the superb engine braking allow you to stay in control when you're braking without 'free-wheeling'.

High visibility

Bright ideas.

The multi-function LCD display gives at-a-glance driver information. Rear brake lights ensure extra visibility and twin headlights give high power illumination for safety in all conditions.

Improved rider comfort

Ergonomic design.

Get your work done in comfort and style. The independent double-wishbone front suspension and rubber-cushioned mountings keep vibrations low for a super-comfortable ride.

Wide-ranging gear ratios

Impressive pulling power.

With five forward gears and one reverse gear, you get maximum pulling power even at low revs. And auto-clutch gives you fast, trouble-free gear changes.

Low pressure tyres

Sure-footed traction.

Not only do our tyres provide great traction, but they also leave tracks no deeper than a human footprint. So they're kind to the environment and ideal for soft or muddy conditions.

4-stroke engine

Truly legendary.

In 1964, we invented the world's first 4-stroke outboard engine. It's powerful, efficient, quiet and kind to the environment. Everything you'd expect from a Honda.

Made for the ATV

Designed from the dirt up.

Unlike other manufacturers, our engines are designed especially for ATV. Our engines are longitudinally mounted, which means that there is a more direct power flow to the rear wheels and greater ground clearance.

Double-wishbone suspension

The easy way to cover the ground.

This allows each wheel to independently track the ground and gives improved control, braking and bump absorption. So you get a perfectly balanced ride.

Designed for kids

Super safe.

The handlebars and short-reach front brake lever have been designed for greater comfort and safety for our younger riders. And the tough plastic skid plate and centre mud guards give better protection.

Driving made easy

It's child's play.

The 4-speed manual gear shift, automatic clutch and adjustable throttle limiter make it really easy for young riders to master this ATV quickly.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

  • What does ATV stand for?
All Terrain Vehicles (ATV). Honda design and manufacturer specifically for off-road use only.
  • What types of ATV does Honda produce?
We currently have three variations to the ATV. The utility, leisure and sports versions.
  • Is there a minimum age limit to ride an ATV?
Yes. You need to be 12 for a Sports TRX90. All of our other products carry a minimum rider age of 16. For all safety information refer to your ATV, the owners manuals and our ATV site regarding the ride right campaign.
  • What are the top speeds for your ATV's?
Honda does not publish any top speeds for its ATV's. Our ATV's are designed for off-road use and therefore depending on conditions and ground type the ATV could experience many variations and they will react differently to each one. We do not believe that straight line speed is a necessary requirement and this is why Honda engineers have applied specific technology to our products.
  • Does Honda (UK) have the power figures in BHP for ATV's?
No. We do not publish any figures relating to BHP figures for our range of ATV's. There is not an industry standard for measuring the BHP of ATV's. It would be up to each manufacturer to decide which was the correct way to measure these figures, therefore the figures would not be consistent from one manufacturer to another.

We also do not provide BHP figures because it gives the end user the information to register the ATV as a Quadricycle (SVA approved). Honda (UK) does not endorse the use of Honda ATV's on the road for any reason apart from "Light Agricultural Vehicle" category of road registered use.

Quadricycle certification is undertaken by individuals at their own risk and to criteria laid down by VOSA and each modification requires individual power certification and testing by an SVA testing centre. The original manufacturer BHP statistics are therefore irrelevant for this registration process.
  • What is the process for making my Honda ATV road legal?
When you purchase a new ATV the supplying dealer will issue a V55. If the ATV is used or a second hand purchase and they require an age related document they should contact their nearest Honda authorised dealer who will assist in obtaining a proof of age certificate. In all cases a road legal kit MUST be fitted. Only UTILITY machines may be registered as agricultural motor vehicles (Agricultural, Horticultural or Foresty use). Honda has produced some guidance notes, these are available from all Honda authorised ATV dealers. It is not possible to register Sport ATV's.
  • Will Honda be introducing a Diesel powered ATV?
No. Currently there are no plans to introduce a diesel powered ATV.
