| How
do I get my motorcycle or moped licence
There are several
different ways that you can get your licence, depending on
your age and the type of bike or scooter that you wish to
ride.
Moped Licences
You can apply for a
provisional licence from 16 years of age, but it is only valid
once you have completed CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) with
an approved training body. A full moped licence gives
provisional motorcycle entitlement.
Can
I ride a moped without any training?
Yes, but only if you
hold a full car licence and passed your car test before
February 2001. You will not need to display ‘L’ plates on your
moped. However if you passed your car test after February 2001
then you will need to complete CBT training. Motorcycle Licences
You must be a minimum
of 17 years of age to be able to hold a provisional motorcycle
licence. What
can I do with a provisional motorcycle licence?
You may ride a moped
or a motorcycle as a learner and must display ‘L’ plates. Once
a CBT course has been completed it is legal to ride a
motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc unaccompanied. However you
will not be able to carry a passenger or ride on motorways.
What
is compulsory basic training (CBT)?
CBT is the starting
point for new riders and is normally a one day course that
must be taken at a training centre approved by the Driving
Standards Agency (DSA).
What
test do I need to take to obtain a full licence ?
There are three
categories of licence:
- Category P
(Provisional)
- Category A1 (Light
Motorcycle)
- Category A
(Standard)
